Body Composition
Track more than just weight with InBody integration, trust scores, and intelligent noise filtering.
Your scale weight is one of the least reliable indicators of your actual progress. NutriJourney goes beyond the number on the scale to give you a complete picture of your body composition and filter out the noise that misleads most dieters.
Beyond the Scale
Weight fluctuates daily based on hydration, sodium intake, carbohydrate storage, hormonal cycles, and more. Tracking weight alone without context leads to frustration and bad decisions. NutriJourney tracks:
- Body fat percentage -- The most meaningful indicator of fat loss progress
- Lean muscle mass -- Ensure you are preserving or building muscle
- Visceral fat -- The metabolically dangerous fat around your organs
- Body water percentage -- Hydration status affects every other measurement
- Segmental analysis -- Muscle and fat distribution across arms, legs, and trunk
InBody Integration
NutriJourney integrates with InBody bioelectrical impedance analysis devices, available at many gyms and fitness centers:
- Connect -- Link your InBody account in Settings or scan the QR code at a participating gym
- What it measures -- Body fat percentage, skeletal muscle mass, body water, visceral fat level, segmental lean analysis
- Scan frequency -- We recommend scanning every 2-4 weeks for meaningful trend data. More frequent scans add noise without value.
- Automatic sync -- Scan results sync to NutriJourney automatically once your account is linked
You do not need an InBody device to use NutriJourney. Manual weight logging works too -- the trust score system and noise filtering apply to all measurement types.
Trust Scores
Not all weigh-ins are created equal. NutriJourney assigns a trust score to each measurement based on the conditions under which it was taken:
- Time of day -- Early morning fasted measurements score highest
- Hydration status -- Dehydrated or overhydrated readings are flagged
- Recent meals -- Post-meal measurements are weighted lower
- Consistency -- Measurements taken under similar conditions to your baseline score higher
Trust scores range from 0 to 1. A morning fasted weigh-in might score 0.95, while a post-dinner measurement might score 0.4. Higher trust scores carry more weight in your trend calculations.
Weight Noise Filtering
Daily weight fluctuations of 2-5 pounds are completely normal and almost never represent actual fat gain or loss. NutriJourney filters this noise by:
- Separating real trends from daily fluctuations using statistical smoothing
- Displaying a noise band that shows the expected range of daily variation
- Highlighting when a reading falls outside the expected range (which may indicate a real change)
- Never triggering alarms or adjustments based on a single data point
Trigger Correlation
After 14 or more days of data, NutriJourney begins identifying what triggers your weight fluctuations using linear regression analysis:
- Carbohydrate intake -- High-carb days often cause water retention of 1-3 pounds
- Sodium intake -- Excess sodium can cause temporary water weight of 2-4 pounds
- Workout intensity -- Heavy resistance training causes inflammation-related water retention
- Sleep quality -- Poor sleep affects cortisol and water balance
These correlations appear as trigger banners on your My Body screen, helping you understand why your weight moved rather than just that it moved.
Trust-Weighted Averages
Your true trend line is not a simple average of your weigh-ins. NutriJourney calculates a trust-weighted average where:
- High-trust measurements (morning, fasted, consistent conditions) contribute more to the trend
- Low-trust measurements (post-meal, inconsistent timing) contribute less
- The result is a smoother, more accurate picture of your actual trajectory
This means you can weigh yourself whenever is convenient without worrying about "bad" data points skewing your trend. The system handles it automatically.
